I guess if you live in a third world shithole rife with murder and corruption you have to have SOMETHING to get excited about...

There is no comparison to the european footie at all. I mean ive been to quite a few arenas and games but in NONE of those i got that excited.

For example at a game of Boca Juniors the fans sing and jump for 2 hours if not more nonstop. They dont boo they dont get mad. They just push themselves and their team. Its incredible.

I mean in spurts we have loud arenas as well (Borussia Dortmund as an example), but not for a whole game.

But the main difference is the vibe around those games. First you have to know that since some major riots there are no visiting teams fans allowed in the arenas. Only members (socios) can buy tickets. So i could only get tickets for the Copa Libertadores (aka Champions League).

The 2 Boca tickets were about 1.000$ and the company from a friend in Buenos Aires gracefully invited us. For the Racing tickets we paid about 150$ for the best seats. In comparison in Camp Nou we paid that for ONE ticket...(and the atmosphere was dull as a sunday league game...)

You can go about it like this, the arenas themselves are not dangerous since theres so much police and army. The problem is getting to those grounds. For example La Boca is one of the areas where you can not walk around like a tourist because it is really dangerous.

I desperately wanted to go to San Lorenzo but i was strictly advised not to step foot into the area. One side of the arena is located in one of the biggest slums Buenos Aires has to offer.

And a slum in argentina is something i sure as hell dont wanna visit.

In summary i can only recommend visiting a game there if you have the chance. But dont wear expensive stuff and dont expect good football because the overall level is about championship level id say. It is all about the atmosphere.

For some more background i can strongly recommend the vid about the hooligan scene from Danny Dyer

The fan restrictions are running for a few years already with no end in sight since the overall vibe in the country is getting really heated. Since the latest changes in government almost 35% of the population lives beneath the poverty line.

So it is only going to get worse.

And no those slums are really dangerous. For some parts of the city they have barriers with military police so that tourists dont end up on the wrong side of a street.

I have a friend who's wife is from Buenos Aires and she says yeah, the area around the stadium is really scary and sketchy.  If you're going to a game, you're usually ok...most groups will pick up stragglers and smaller groups just so there's safety in numbers. One of the services the Ultras provide is arranging meet-ups and such for people so that they can then all walk through those areas.  And yeah, you dress way the fuck down and don't wear jewelry and pretty much carry two phones so that if you get jacked for yours you have a decoy you can give them.  Scary place.  It explains Tevez, lol.
