Battleborn or Overwatch?

Post by GoMonkey66 on Fri Apr 29, 2016 1:41 pm

Battleborn:
Battleborn is a first-person shooter with multiplayer online battle arena elements, in which players engage in combat through a first-person perspective. Unlike other first-person shooters, the quests and game modes of the game were designed to feature a format and structure similar to a multiplayer online battle arena game. The game will also feature a leveling system, which resets when a match begins. Players start with the same basic level, and they can unlock new skills and abilities during a match. When players gain enough skill points and are allowed to level up, they can select one of up to three choices to pick per level through each characters' unique Helix Tree.
The game will feature 25 playable characters upon release, with each having different abilities and weapons. For example, Rath is a melee-based character who is equipped with a katana, while Thorn is a long-ranged character, whose primary weapon is a bow. Characters of supporting role, such as Miko, who specializes in healing other characters of the same team, will also be playable. Each character also has their own "ultimate ability". In addition to melee and ranged combat, characters can also cast magic and area-of-effect attacks. Characters controlled by artificial intelligence in multiplayer will also be featured in the game. Players can also switch to third-person perspective to activate special abilities.
A campaign mode, which can be played solo or co-operatively with four other players, will also be included in the game. The game will feature an interconnected world and an objective-driven narrative. Three modes called Meltdown, an Arena mode, Incursion, which tasks players to destroy enemies' base, and Devastation, which tasks players to capture bases, will also be playable upon launch.

Overwatch:

Overwatch features squad-based combat with two opposing teams of six players each. Players choose one of several hero characters, each with their own unique abilities and role classes. The four character roles include: offense characters with high speed and attack but low defense, defense characters meant to form choke points for enemies, support characters that provide buffs and debuffs for their allies and enemies respectively (such as healing or speed alterations), and tank characters that have a large amount of armor and hit points to withstand enemy attacks and draw fire away from teammates. Players can switch between characters in-game following deaths, which is encouraged by the game's overall design. The game's maps are inspired by real-world locations; the first three maps unveiled ("King's Row", "Hanamura", "Temple of Anubis") are inspired by London, Japan, and the ruins of Ancient Egypt, respectively.

Game modes

Overwatch currently has three main game modes, with some maps featuring a hybrid of assault and payload:

  • Assault: The attacking team is tasked with capturing two target points on the map, while the defending team must stop them.
  • Escort: The attacking team is tasked with escorting a payload to a certain delivery point before time runs out, while the defending team must stop them. The payload vehicle moves along a fixed track when any player on the attacking team is close to it. In some escort maps (referred to as hybrid), the attacking team has to capture the payload first before actually escorting it.
  • Control: Each team tries to capture and maintain a control point until their capture percentage reaches 100%. This game mode is played in a best-of-three format.

Characters
Characters in Overwatch come in four varieties: Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support. These roles serve to categorize the heroes of Overwatch by similar characteristics that can be used to describe them and their playstyle.

  • Offense: Offense characters have high mobility and are known for their ability to deal large amounts of damage. To balance this, offense characters have a low number of hit points.

  • Defense: Defense characters excel at protecting specific locations and creating choke points. They can also provide several means of field support, such as sentry set-up and trapping the enemy team.

  • Tank: Tank characters have the most hit points out of all the characters in the game. Because of this, they are able to draw enemy fire away from their teammates to themselves, so as to disrupt the enemy team.

  • Support: Support characters are utility characters that have abilities that enhance their own team and/or weaken the enemy team. They might not deal the most damage or have the most hit points, but the buffs and debuffs they provide ensure that their teammates who do will make short work of their opponents.

So, you have a deeper MOBA type experience vs. a more traditional class/role based shooter.  Both look fun.  So...thoughts?

I've already pre-ordered Battleborn so I'm definitely getting, that said I'm still not sure about Overwatch.

I don't think a proper decision can really be made at this point until we know the full scope of the games.  Based off of betas, you don't have the full picture (unless it's the Destiny beta, lol).  For instance, the Overwatch beta has gone through a few phases now, where they've completely changed things up a few times in major ways.  Also, we don't have details on all of the various modes and maps and whatnot, for either game.

Definitely leaning towards Overwatch now...

What’s in the Overwatch open beta?

The Beta will contain every part of the game that is finished by the time it goes live, which will likely be the near-finished version of the game given it’s just two weeks before launch. Here’s what that’s confirmed to mean:

  • 21 heroes, which we’ve detailed in our Overwatch character list.

  • 12 maps split across four game modes:

    • Payload - Dorado, Route 66, Watchpoint: Gibraltar
    • Point Capture - Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries
    • Hybrid (capture a point, then payload) - Hollywood, King’s Row, Numbani
    • Control (King of the Hill) - Ilios, Lijiang Tower, Nepal

  • The Overwatch progression system of unlocking skins, sprays and other cosmetics.

  • However, Competitive mode has been disabled and won't be back until after launch.

All of this will be present in both the early access period and the main event. Chances are there will also be a mighty patch to kick the beta off, so expect changes from what you may have seen or played in the access weekends and closed beta. At the very least, there'll be more lovely, lovely cosmetics.

I don't know, Overwatch appeals so much more in a lot of ways. Extolling just it's virtues, while comparing the two:
*shorter rounds
*skill based, in that it's all about balanced characters and tactics rather than mid-game stuff
* what you see is what you get -  opponents strengths and weaknesses or limitatiations are always a known quantity.
*quicker "jump in and play" action
*nice selection of characters. Both have this, but these all seem like fun and have a lot to offer
*not a grind. All upgrades are cosmetic, but there are lots of them
* seems like a bigger variety of maps at this point

Things I don't like/make me go meh:
*multiplayer only -  this is OK, but sometimes I'd rather just not deal with people and their fuckery
*I like unlocks, because they give me something to work towards, but since all of them are cosmetic in this game it makes it harder to actually customize based on preference or playstyle
*worried about maps/modes, in that it might get stale at some point if the capture points are always the same -  tactics end up being standardized
*without variation in builds, things can become boring...once people figure out what to use when, it could be the same fight over and over
*bad team mates. The game is built so that teamwork and communication wins. If not enough friends play it, it could get frustrating to play with randies.

I just don't know...I guess it comes down to peer pressure, lol. It's weird that both games are out so close to each other, and are so similar and yet so different. I want a fun and varied shooter but I'm bored with the military shit and both of these games have great ideas and compelling arguments. I wish Blizzard and Gearbox worked together on one title, lol.

Well based on convos I've had with people not on this board, most are getting Overwatch, so that means I'll have fgtz to play with. So... It's ordered.

Played a few rounds of the beta last night.  Overwatch is really fun.  Bit more accessible than battleborn.  really runs smooth.  Very cool style, like the plays of the game and personal highlights

It'll be even better playing with a coordinated team.  Right now it's either that or nothing, so it's steamroller vs noobs, noobs vs noobs, or evenly matched players that have a clue.
